Epilepsy and sports

Among the conditions under which sport is traditionally contraindicated is epilepsy. There is an opinion that physical exertion can provoke attacks and worsen the course of the disease. Movement is necessary for man. It not only strengthens health, but also has a beneficial effect on emotions, helps fight depression, irritability, bad mood. And many people who are forced to give up physical exertion because of their illness, are hard tolerated by the lack of exercise. Among the conditions under which sport is traditionally contraindicated is epilepsy. There is an opinion that physical exertion can provoke attacks and worsen the course of the disease.

This opinion is especially hard for children. Epilepsy in Russia affects up to 1% of the child population. A child with convulsive seizures is registered in the clinic, where he is given a certificate that exempts from physical education classes or allows him to engage in a facilitated program. Parents cherish it and do not give it to the sports sections, they try to protect themselves from active games in the yard, from bicycles and rollers. But a kid with epilepsy is an ordinary child with ordinary children's needs - running, moving, developing.

In fact, seizures of epilepsy, nothing, including physical exercise, are not provoked. This is the nature of this disease. In the treatment of valproic acid drugs, patients experience such a side effect of this drug as weight gain. Often against the background of valproate intake, obesity develops. In this case, physical activity is simply necessary for the patient.

The epileptic sufferer should not strip the sport out of his life. Without restrictions, you can practice athletics. Running, jumping, aerobic exercise will only bring benefit to the patient. Suitable badminton and tennis, volleyball and other team games, skiing, aerobics, yoga. If an attack occurs during the session, the probability of injury is the same as in normal life.

Less favorable in terms of the danger of injury during an attack horse riding, bicycle, skates and rollers. They can be dealt with if there are no seizures or they are rare and occur at night. You can ride a bicycle only in the pedestrian zone, away from the roads. Always wear a helmet. An instructor who deals with a sick person should know about his condition.

If certain conditions are met, a patient with epilepsy can practice swimming. Attacks should be rare. You can swim in the pool, having warned the trainer about your condition. In the water, nearby, there must always be someone from friends who knows about the attacks and, if necessary, will help.

Unfortunately, there are sports that are forbidden for a patient with convulsive seizures without reservations. This gymnastics, football, hockey, downhill skiing, mountaineering, parachuting.

An important point is that the sports patient with epilepsy can only deal with himself. He should not participate in competitions and train in the regime of increased workload. And if he is allowed to ride a bicycle or on horseback, then running and cycling are no longer for him.

Sports activities help people with epilepsy to lead a normal life and not feel isolated from society.
